Today in Sports History: Big Day for Big Scorers

March 2nd

In 1962, Wilt Chamberlain scores 100 points in a single game.  The game took place at the Hershey Sports Arena in Hershey Pennsylvania where the Philadelphia Warriors were playing the New York Knicks.  By the end of the 1st quarter, Chamberlain had 23 points.  At the half, he had 41, and after 3, 69.

This was not the first time Wilt had surpassed 50, or even the 60 mark.  He had previously scored 73 in a regulation game, and 78 in a triple overtime game.

Tonight, he laid down the hammer.   In the 4th quarter, he scored 31 of Philly’s 44 for a cool 100.  That total still stands as a record.  In addition to setting that record, he set another one that night.  Even though he was a poor free throw shooter, he set the record for most in a single game.  The Warriors won the contest 169-147.

In 1969, Boston Bruin Phil Esposito became the first NHL player to pass the 100 point mark in a single season.  Esposito would finish the season with 49 goals and 77 points, good for 126 points.  During his career, he would pass the century mark a total of 6 times with his highest coming in the 1970-71 season when he tallied 152.

Also on this day in 2004, Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott died.
