Thank You Blues! Sports FOO

On Thursday, October 6th, 2005, the St. Louis Blues had their home opener against the Detroit Redwings.  As is the custom, they had the on-ice player introductions, and except for a spotlight, Scottrade Center was dark.  Watching on T.V., I couldn’t help but think I was watching the movie Major League.  “Who are these @#$! Guys?”  They dropped the home opener 4-3, their 2nd of 46 losses that season, to go with just 21 wins.  It was the start of the Dark Ages for the Note, who had made the playoffs for 24 consecutive years.

The Blues had some Jake Taylors and Roger Dorns-guys who were household names.  After two seasons in Dallas, Scott Young would begin his 2nd tour of duty in St. Louis.  Young would lead the team in points with 49.  Dough Weight was still there.  He led in assist with 33.  Mike Sillinger had the most goals.  It’s a nice honor, but with only 22, the Blues just didn’t have enough scoring punch.  There was also Keith Tkachuck, but he played in just 41 games that season.

The only player who remains with the Blues from the ‘05-‘06 campaign is defenseman Barret Jackman.

Four goaltenders went between the pipes for the Blues that season.  None of them had a record above .500.  There was Reinhard Davis with an 0-5-1 record and goals against average of 4.67.  Patrick Lalime was 4-18-8 and a GAA of 3.64. Jason Bacashihua, 4-10-1 and 3.23.  Curtis Sanford was the “bright spot.”  He had even .500 record at 13-13-5 and a respectable 2.66 GAA.  In fact, he is the only one left of the bunch who is playing in the NHL, having appeared in 36 games this season for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

In between then and now, there have been a lot of low points.  They managed to make the playoffs just one time—2009 against the Vancouver Canucks.  The Blues made a very entertaining run late in the regular season just to make the playoffs.  They ended up with the number 6 seed, but were sacrificial lambs to Roberto Luongo and the Canucks.  The Blues managed just 5 goals while being swept in 4 games.

In fact, they have not won a playoff game since April 12th, 2004.  That was a 4-1 victory against the San Jose Sharks.  They would lose that first round series 4 games to 1.  When is the last time they won a series?  That was a 2002 first round match-up against the Chicago Blackhawks in which the Blues won 4 games to 1 before losing to the Detroit Redwings in the 2nd round 4 games to 1.

Compare that to what the Cardinals have done since the Blues last won in the post-season—2 World Series titles.

Even the Rams have a playoff win since 2004.  No Kidding!  January 8th, 2005 the Rams knocked off the Seattle Seahawks 27-20 in the Wild Card Round.

This season started off looking like it was going to be a carbon copy of recent memory.  The Blues would win some, lose some, and struggle to make the playoffs.
On Saturday, November 5th, they went to Minnesota and lost 2-1.  The loss dropped them below .500 at 6-7.   The Blues played sloppy, lost their composure, and took 8 penalties.  Goalie Jaroslav Halak lost his 5th consecutive game.  The next day, they jolted the team.

It is always darkest before dawn, and a new day was about to begin.  Without warning, the organization fired Davis Payne and brought in Ken Hithcock.

Immediately we liked what we heard.  Hitchcock talked about playing a sound defensive system, playing the entire length of the ice, playing a complete 60 minutes of hockey.  It sounded great, but you couldn’t blame us for being skeptical, right?

At the time of writing this, the Blues have gone 42-13-9 under Hitchcock.  Has their ever been such an in-season turnaround in sports?  We’ve seen teams change in the middle of the season.  We, in St. Louis, just witnessed last fall a memorable stretch with the Cardinals.  But, has there ever been such a sustained turnaround like this ever in all of sports?

They may not have playoff success, and the Blues may not be able to repeat this next year.  Who knows?  There maybe some players who are having career years, and they might not be able to ever equal it.  Nonetheless, it has been a great season.  The Blues have put the fun back in hockey.

One thing that is different about this team as opposed to say in the 1990’s, is that it is built on team defense and goaltending.  In the 1990’s, you had the likes of Brett Hull, Brendan Shanahan, and Geoff Courtnall.  It was great, exciting hockey.  But, goal scorers go in slumps.  Team defense generally does not go into slumps.  You may play a few bad games in a row, but prolonged slumps generally do not occur.  Strong goaltending can go in slumps, but , so far, it hasn’t happened.

Baseball uses the phrase, “Hope springs eternal.”  Here’s hoping for Blues fans for a long run this spring.  I’m not predicting that they will win the Stanley Cup, but let’s face it.  Here in St. Louis we have been blessed with great baseball, and even a Lombardi Trophy, even if we are paying the piper for that now.

But the Blues have only been to the Finals 3 times—1968, ’69, and ’70 when all they had to do was get passed the other expansion teams to qualify.  They walked away emptied handed each time.

They may win it this year, they may not.  A lot of things have to go right for any team to win championships in any sports, on any level.  But it would be nice just once for the Blues to bring it home.  Regardless, it has been a great regular season.

Today in Sports History: Hull, Howe, & Knute

March 31st

Sometimes the Foo has a hard time with Today in Sports History (TISH).  Some days, not a lot has happened in sports history.  Other days are difficult because the Foo has to choose among several events.  Today, the Foo can't decide among 3 things.  In 1991, Brett Hull of the St. Louis Blues, scored his 86th goal of the season.  In 1931, legendary coach Knute Rockne died in a plane crash.  The Trifecta is completed by Mr. Hockey.  Born in 1928, Gordie Howe turns 84.

The following is a link to an an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, written a year ago by Jeremy Ruhterford.  Read Article  Here is another link to stats related to Hull's 86-goal season.  This also appeared on stltoday.com  Personally, those were golden days for me.  I was just a month away from graduating high school.  Living in St. Louis, this was an incredible time to be a hockey fan.  I am hoping for more magic tonight as the Blues could clinch the Central Division title with a victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

American sports suffered perhaps its first tragedy on this day in 1931.  Knute Rockne was on a plane that went down near Emporia, Kansas.  This is an intriguing story from espn.com about an eyewitness to the crash.  Rockne was born March 4th, 1888 in Voss, Norway.  At the age of 5, his family came to America and settled in Chicago.  He was actually a chemist, who after his playing days, helped coach the track and football teams at his alma mater, Notre Dame.  He eventually would revolutionize the game when he became the head coach of the Fighting Irish.  In 13 seasons at Notre Dame, he had over a hundred wins, five seasons they were without a loss or tie, and they had 3 national championships.  This is a link to the official Knute Rockne web site.  Curiously, there is a town in Texas named specifically for him.  Rockne, Texas.  I can understand if it was in Indiana or even Illinois.  But Texas?  Oh well!

Finally, that brings us to Gordie Howe, born in this day 1928 in Floral, Saskatchewan.  The stats are staggering!  Over 800 goals in the NHL, another 419 in the World Hockey Association, over 1,700 NHL games, and 419 games in the WHA.  His professional career would dawn while World War II was still being fought (the 1944-'45 season-OHL), and would last until the height of the Cold War (1979-'80 for the Hartford Whalers who had been absorbed into the NHL when the WHA ceased).

He won 4 Stanley Cups and was a 29 time All Star.  Did you know Mr. Hockey and Mrs. Hockey, in honor of his wife Colleen, are both registered trademarks?

The New York Rangers had their hands on number 9 and let him go.  He tried out for New York, but did not make the team at the age of 15.

This is a link to Gordie Howe's web site .

Today in Sports History: Cy Young

Cy Young born
on this day, March 29, 1867

This person won 511 games in Major League Baseball, he has a winning percentage of .618, he won more than 30 games four times, he lead the league in wins 5 times, 5 times he finished a season with an ERA less than 2.  However, he never won a Cy Young Award during his career.  He never won it because it was never around.  Nonetheless, the award bears his name.

He debuted August 6th, 1890 for the Cleveland Spiders.  He tossed a 3-hit shutout.

In addition to his 511 victories, Cy Young had over 300 losses—316.   Both are still Major League records.

He had a stretch of 14 seasons where he won 20 games in 13 of those seasons.

He appeared in only two post-season series:  The 1892 Championship Series, and the 1903 World Series

It’s amazing to think that Young was not a member of baseball’s first Hall of Fame class in 1936.  He did get in on the second ballot in 1937.

749 complete games

76 shutouts

He won the pitcher’s triple crown—wins, strikeouts, ERA—in 1901

He threw the first perfect game in modern Major League history.  He would add two no-hitters.

Win number 511 came September 22, 1911 when blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 1-0.

His final game was October 6th, 1911 as a member of the Boston Rustlers.

He would die November 4th, 1955 at the age of 88.

Cy Young was born on March 29th,  1867.  His given name was Denton True.

As a hitter, he wasn’t too shabby, hitting over .200 for his career with 18 homeruns.

Today in Sports History: Marshall and Iron Mike

Marshall Faulk celebrates a birthday
Iron Mike is sent to the big house

Has there ever been anyone better at running and catching the ball out of the backfield than Marshall Faulk?  I’m not talking about the runner like a Jim Brown, the speed of Marcus Allen, the power of Bo Jackson, or the agility of Walter Payton.  I’m talking about the duplicity of being someone who could run for a hundred yards, receive a hundred yards in a game, or both in the same game.  He is the only person in NFL history to have 12,000 yards rushing and 6,000 yards receiving.  In fact, he nearly had 7,000 receiving yards.  1999 was Faulk’s best year.  He ran for nearly 1,400 and he had over a 1,000 yards receiving.  That was also the year that the St. Louis Rams became the Greatest Show on Turf.  In Marshall’s first year with the Rams, they went 13-3 on the way to winning a Super Bowl.

Before the NFL, Faulk was a household name for college football fans.  Attending San Diego State University, Faulk was an instant success.  September 15, 1991, Faulk was playing in just his second college game.  That day, he shredded the University of Pacific for 386 yards and 7 touchdowns.  That was in just one game!  He would finish his freshmen season with over 1,400 yards and 21 touchdowns on the ground and 2 more in the air.  His college success would lead him to be selected by the Indianapolis Colts as the 2nd overall pick in the 1994 draft.

Marshall Faulk was born on the day, March 26th, 1973 in New Orleans.

It was also on this day 20 years ago, March 26th, 1992, that Mike Tyson was sentenced to 10 years in prison for the rape of beauty contestant Desiree Washington.  The last 4 years of the sentence were suspended, and he would be released March 25, 1995.

The judge who handed down the sentence was Patricia J. Gifford.  She denied a motion by the defense that would allow Tyson to remain free until an appeal.  With that, Tyson hugged Camille Ewald, the woman who helped raise him, and he was taken out of the court by sheriff’s deputies.

The story started the previous July.  Well, I guess the story begins long before that, but this episode began when Tyson invited Washington to his Indianapolis hotel room the night of July 19th, 1991.  Washington testified that Tyson pinned her down on his bed and raped her.  In addition, she claimed that she wept after the ordeal, while Tyson laughed about it.

Tyson’s chauffer testified to Washington’s emotional state after leaving the hotel room, and a doctor, who examined her, said her condition was consistent with rape.

On the stand, Tyson claimed that the encounter was consensual.

It took a jury almost 10 hours to convict Tyson of the crime, but did so on February 10th, 1992.   Officially, he was convicted of rape and two counts of criminal deviate conduct.

This is the old line about how I can't hear a word you're saying because your actions are screaming at me. 7 Signs of a Sports Apocalypse

The sports world has come off its axis this week.  Look for the 7 following events to occur, according to ancient sports scripture.

1.     The St. Louis Blues will win the Stanley Cup, ending over 40 years of frustration.  The St. Louis community has been faithful to the Blues since 1967, and the Note have come close a couple of times, only to have their hearts broken.

2.     Cubs win World Series:  100+ years come to an end.

3.     Jose Oquendo will named as manager of a team:  After being passed over by several teams, including the Cardinals, Jose finally gets his chance.

4.     A team outside the SEC wins the College Football Championship.

5.     Mizzou wins the NCAA Basketball Championship-next year.

6.     Greg Norman will win the Masters:  I know he’s beyond his prime, but this is the year of the Shark.

7.     Barry Bonds will humble himself and admit to steroid use and renounce his homerun records.

These will be unbelievable events, but after the past few days, ancient scripture points in this direction.

Today in Sports History: Jackie Joyner Kersee

March 3, 1962

One of the most dominant female athletes, or just athletes, was born on this day in 1962—Jackie Joyner Kersee.

In a nutshell, for her track and field competition, she has 3 Olympic Gold Medals, 1 silver, and 2 bronze.  In addition, she has 5 more gold medals combined in the World Championships and Pan-Am Games.

Furthermore, JJK starred at UCLA on the hardwood.  For the Bruins, she scored over  a thousand points, which puts her in the top twenty scoring all time for UCLA.  This was accomplished while she was setting records on the track.
